Chen KeZhan, born in Singapore, began painting at three, earnestly practicing calligraphy and traditional Chinese brush painting throughout his childhood, and at eighteen, considered himself a professional artist. In 1983, he moved to Paris to study music and held several one-man and group exhibitions. In 1986, he returned to Singapore. From 1978-1990 KeZhan held thirteen solo exhibitions in France, New York, the Netherlands, Asean countries and Singapore. He held several group exhibitions during 1977-2001 in Singapore, USA, Hong Kong, Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Glasgow, Asean countries, London, Paris and the Netherlands; including 2001 La Biennale di Venezia in Venice, Italy. He received many awards namely: 1985 - silver medal, Salon des Artistes Francais, 1993-94 - Artist-in-Residence Fellowship, Honolulu Academy of Arts, 1994 - Young artist award, 1993 - Government of Singapore, 1995 - Singapore's representative at the Krasnoyarsk Interpleinair of Artists of Asia Pacific countries, Russia and 1999 - Patron of the arts award presented by Ministry of Information and The Arts, Singapore. A passionate gardener his garden is a source of creative inspiration. He listens to eastern and western music as he paints in the silence of the night till early dawn. His skillful control and fine balance are characteristics of his paintings. The blend of colors combined with bold and deft brushstrokes seizes one's attention with its vitality and energy. KeZhan has developed an international reputation and is recognized as part of a generation of Chinese artists who have developed a new language of abstract brush painting and calligraphy. His work is included in private and museum collections worldwide.
